| Zhangjiajie
is in the northwest of Hunan Province, about 400 km away
trom Changsha. Composed of the Zhangjiajie National Forest
Park, the Tianri Mountain and the Suoxiyu Valley, the
prefecture has a total area of 369 square km. It is a
scenic area made up of sandstone from the primitive ecological
system and the forest coverage rate reaches 97.7 percent.
In 1992, it was inscribed in the list of in the World
Natural Heritage by UNESCO. Major scenic spots are the
Huangshizhai, the Jinbian Brook, the Tianzi Mountain,
the Huanglong Cave, the Baofeng Lake and the Maoyan River.
Huangshizhai
This place is a high-south, low-north terrace composed
of many cliffs in the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
The top consists of more than 20 hectares, with over 10
scene viewing platforms from where one can enjoy majestic
sandstone peak forests.
Jinbian Brook
Also located in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, it extends
6 km from north to south, winding across mountains and
valleys. The brook is limpid through the year, with stone
peaks standing erect on both banks.
Mount Tianzi
It covers an area of 100 square km. The highest peak is
Tianzi Peak which has an elevation of 1,262.5 meters.
Taking in the view there, one can see solitary and clustering
mountains among the clouds mid mist.
Huanglong Cave
An underground karst cave in the northeast of Suoxiyu
Valley, it is about 15 km deep and covers 20 hectares.
Wulingyuan
It's
situated in the northwestern Hunan Province, covering
an area of 300 square miles. It consists of four scenic
areas: Zhangjiajie, Suoxiyu, Tianzishan and Mengdonghe.
In 1992, the UNESCO listed Wulingyuan as World Natural
Heritage.
Rare Spectacular Rock Pinnacles: As its most unique feature,
Wulingyuan abounds in exquisite and grotesque rock pinnacles.
It has over 3100 rock pinnacles, out of which, 1036 are
more than 400 meters high; each endowed with a singular
shape. Seen from the heights, row upon row, cluster after
cluster, of various spectacular stone formations; roll
out like a turbulent sea of forests with tremendous tidal
waves, as if whipped up by bolts out of the blue.
One feels as if staying in a fairyland enclosed by stone
forests. Exquisite Lakes, Waterfalls and Streams: Here
the springs and streams are numerous, and the waters,
are abundant and free from any pollution. From west to
east, the Jinbianxi Stream and the Suoxi Stream serpentine
across Wuling Yuan. Over 50 rivulets from its west to
East End, drop from high, down to the floor of the canyon,
splashing with pearl-like gleaming sprays. These waterfalls
hang like curtains woven with strings of glossy beads.
Baofeng Lake and Huangling Spring are among its famous
scenic spots.
Fascinating Under-ground Palaces: Limestone caves existing
in such great numbers, large sizes, and with so fantastic
stalactite formations, as those in Wuling Yuan, are few
and far between. They include yellow Dragon Cave, Cave
of Guanyin (A Bodhisattra), Water-gurgling Cave, Cave
of Drifting Clouds, and Cave of Hanging Silk Web.
Mountain of Myriad Treasures: Wuling
Yuan is endowed with a temperate climate and abundant
rainfalls, which are very favorable natural conditions
for the existence and reproduction of plants, rare birds
and animals. It has 97% of forest cover, and over 3000
species of higher plants including those rare ones like
Yunnan catalpa etc. Wild flowers and plants of more than
150 varieties, over hill and dale, are in bloom all the
year round, filling the air with sweet scents. Terrestrial
vertebrates of some hundred species include, under special
protection, clouded leopard, tarpon, macaque, tiger, giant
salamander, pangolin etc. Birds simply defy enumeration.
